Is there no originality left in Hollywood?!

May 27th 2009 09:49
Okay, how many of you had the living shit scared out of you by Freddy Krueger as a child? Raise your hands.

Yeah. Me too. Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger scared the ever-living crap out of me as a child, to the point where I slept with a night-light until I was in high school. The burnt face, the razor fingered glove... I still get the chills thinking about him. Freddy Krueger was THE boogeyman of my generation.

That being said, I have been following the news surrounding the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street, slated for release April 16, 2010. Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Little Children) has been tapped to succeed Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, and Rooney Mara (Urban Legends: Bloody Mary) to take on the role of Nancy Thompson, originally played by Heather Langenkamp.

For some reason, Katie Cassidy is in this film. In my opinion, her best role was as the girl chained to the bed, dead of a drug overdose in Taken. Her presence in this film is already a bad omen, IMHO, but I digress.

Little is known about production as of yet, I managed to dredge up a few behind the scenes shots of the sets being used, but little else is being let out about this film. Haley's Krueger makeup is still under wraps, and that's really all I'm curious to see: Krueger Redux...or will it be Diet Freddy?

I don't like horror movie remakes. Period. Remakes entail some cocky asshat director picking up a perfectly decent classic horror film, adding some flash and gloss to it, perhaps some gratuitous nudity and computer animation, then remarketing it as a fresh concept. (Ahem, Zach Taylor? Although 300 was fantastic, I still haven't forgiven you for what you did to Dawn of the Dead. Zombies don't run, fuckbag.)

The new Friday the 13th was equally disturbing. Granted, the film was great as far as death scenes and cheap scares go, but the plot was as if someone took the first three Friday the 13th films, chopped them up and had a retarded kid in a helmet go through the pieces and tape them to the wall in random order.

And, as much as I love Rob Zombie, he should be bitch-slapped for what he did to Halloween. No, Rob, your hot wife does NOT have talent, and NO, she shouldn't be in every film you make. Nuff said.

In my opinion, A Nightmare On Elm Street is a horror classic, and the original 1984 version of that film is still scaring kids to this day. It just goes to show that there is truly NO originality left in Hollywood, and studios are getting desperate. You've got to have a lot of balls to fuck with a classic. You ever hear the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" That applies here.

I will more than likely give in and go see the remake, only to see what they've done with my beloved boogeyman. I am hoping that with Jackie Earle Haley's fine acting chops, and naturally creepy personality, he will bring as much to the table as the legendary Robert Englund did. (Englund was a classically trained actor himself, having studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.)

I just hope if this remake tanks, movie studios will stop trotting out their tired cash cows, and go on the hunt for some fresh meat. Until then, I'll content myself with some old-school Romero, Craven, and Carpenter films and leave the studio machine drivel to the mindless masses of consumers.

Nighty-night, kiddies.
